A free press can, of course, be good or bad, but, most certainly without freedom, the press will never be anything but bad.
Belief is with them mechanical, voluntary: they believe what they are paid for – they swear to that which turns to account. Do you suppose, that after years spent in this manner, they have any feeling left answering to the difference between truth and falsehood?
It is precisely the purpose of the public opinion generated by the press to make the public incapable of judging, to insinuate into it the attitude of someone irresponsible, uninformed.
Media is just a word that has come to mean bad journalism.
We’ve uncovered some embarrassing ancestors in the not-too-distant past. Some horse thieves, and some people killed on Saturday nights. One of my relatives, unfortunately, was even in the newspaper business.
